Twenty hotels located in northern Costa Rica participate in an international project to promote the reduction in energy bills.
The initiative called “Project for renewable energy and energy efficiency in Benin, Bhutan and Costa Rica,” is sponsored by the Foundation Energy Network (BUN-CA), FUNDECOOPERACION funded and supported by the Program on South-South Cooperation of the Netherlands.
BUN-CA is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) established in 1991 with headquarters in Costa Rica and operations in Central America, working on the needs and environmental problems.
It also promotes energy efficiency markets with more efficient technologies and rational use of electricity.
The idea is to reduce electricity consumption in some hotels in that part of the country. Enrolled 21 facilities to implement measures to reduce electricity consumption.
On the premises of the hotels have been able to detect a potential energy savings of 250 MWh.
The initiative will involve hotel employees who will receive technical talks on topics such as monitoring the monthly billing practice, good lighting, and proper use of air conditioners, refrigeration, water heating and maintenance of equipment.
This will be possible with the support of the Association of Tourism Microentrepreneurs La Fortuna (Amituffor) and the electric distribution company Coopelesca.
July Retana, project officer of BUN-CA, said that one advantage of this policy is to be achieved in the first instance to raise awareness among tourism operators in the area of La Fortuna on the social and economic benefits that brings greater efficiency energy and promoting renewable energies such as sunlight.
Additional benefits are related to the environment for example achieve lower emissions of greenhouse gases, reduce air pollution and water, and improving the protection of natural resources, among other positive impacts.
